Ça m’arrive à ma sortie de Grand Central, lorsque mes pieds semblent inexplicablement savoir qu’il me faut tourner à gauche plutôt qu’à droite. Lorsque, sans même y penser, j’ai pris la ligne downtown plutôt que lauptown. Lorsque j’ai envie de frapper tous les touristes sur mon chemin quand je tente de traverser Time Square à la course. Lorsque je brunche dans East Village comme je le fais tous les dimanches dans le Mile-End. Lorsque je m’assieds dans un Central Park silencieux à la tombée du jour et que LCD Soundsystem m’y murmure «New York you’re perfect oh please don’t change a thing». Là, je sais que je ne suis plus une invitée, une étrangère. Ce qui peut paraître banal pour plus d’un est l’apogée de tout ce dont j’ai pu rêver toute ma vie. Et aussi grandiose, aussi menaçant, aussi improbable que tout cela puisse paraître, j’ai l’impression que tout se déroule exactement comme il se doit. Je suis à New York. Je suis New York.
